Hey There/These Girls

Moving from newest to oldest, here’s three different takes on essentially the same Ryan Adams song. First, a longer, electric take on “These Girls,” with Adams’ band The Cardinals.

This version is part of the Avatar Sessions, which was basically the band videotaping themselves playing the entire Easy Tiger album (more information can be found here).

Then you have the original, acoustic version of “These Girls,” from 2007’s Easy Tiger.

But that “original” is in reality a reworked version of a song from the unreleased Destroyer Sessions in 2000. That first version of the song is called “Hey There, Mrs. Lovely,” and besides being much slower, has substantially different lyrics from “These Girls.” “Hey There, Mrs. Lovely” can also be found on Extra Cheese, an iTunes only EP from 2009 (as well as a bootleg called Live from Almost Blue in 1999).

So there you have it. A interesting look at the development of a song over a ten-year span. I prefer the recorded Easy Tiger version myself, but all three are excellent. Hope you enjoy.
